early edible perennials
This is my kind of gardening! Plant it and pick it - really low maintenance, very pretty and great for a tub near a bus stop etc (though best to plant above the height of a large dog's hip!) Try buckler leafed sorrel, salad burnet, chives/welsh onions, lemon balm, dandelions. Include a few robust self seeders such as borage, and maybe the giant lovage and you have the makings of a fab salad or even the wonderful Frankfurter Grune Sosse!

Agreed, though I'm not sure I'd want to eat anything grown by the side of the road!

Hmm good point - the bus stop I was thinking of is set back from a quiet road and is on the edge of a village green, so personallly I wouldn't worry here. I suppose though that this is an issue for urban gardening in general. Our local council has offered us a range of 'postage stamp' plots but most are exposed to quite heavy traffic. I wonder if there is any research on this? or even a simple test kit that could be used by urban community gardeners? Even so I think that accompanied by an info board it could be a great awareness raising/education tool - maybe even more so if the board included a warning that the plants were currently not for consumption due to pollution.
***I have also not added a subject title and have the same problem - do we need a 'subject box' when replying to a thread?
Still quite messy looking at the page (buttons on top of photos) also loads of space on the page which would be a waste of time and energy if following a long thread.
Getting the knack of the forum
Hi Melissa,
Yes the thread is a bit messy and hard to follow - not sure how replies and new comments are being added.
I think, if you're offered urban growing space, it is well worth checking historic landuse or to just use containers to be on the safe side. I'm not sure about the facts on pollution from traffic...
Here's great project showing what can be done with BIG containers: http://www.what-if.info/VACANT_LOT.html

Also odd that you have to preview before being given the option to publish your post.

just wondering why posts are
2nd post: just wondering why posts are not appearing in order - this is definitely via the reply button below Josiah's post
(My 3rd post this morning)so
(My 3rd post this morning)so posts seem to be appearing in pretty random order. Could the whole layout of this be looked at? It's quite hard to see where posts begin and end etc - need boxes, panels, date and user name in bold and aligned etc.
Also could we have an option not to 'preview' and just post directly? - I'm getting bored!
My 4th post - so what's
My 4th post - so what's happening is the original post stays at the top and then replies are appearing in reverse order (newest first) below that. In my view quite confusing!
Great idea! Thanks, have
Great idea! Thanks, have posted it to my urban gardening friends.
It seems each person's posts are being kept together with newest on top and first post staying where it is - clearly needs sorting!
forum posting placement
It is (was) confusing so I've changed it to a straightforward listing in chronological order. Much more like the way us humans read stuff.
