Local food project - Questions...

Hi,
I've been looking for an online food community that has a forum, I'm hoping this is the place to be. Though if there's any out there I've missed I'd be great if you shared.
I'm looking to start a project in local food. I currently don't eat local (don't worry, I'm working on this), this frustrates me and I'd like to do something about it. While I don't have any experience in local food what I do have experience with is design-thinking and the internet and how this can be used to organize, connect and enhance communities.
I'm interested in creating digital tools that will allow the local food community to improve their services and empower their efforts resulting in local food that is more convenient and accessible.
I'm currently in the research stage on the topic and it would be great to get a conversation going on some of the problems surrounding local food. The difficulties people have come across when trying to set-up initiatives. Getting customers to switch from Tesco to local etc.
Even better, if you'd like to get involved further in the project or would like to find out more I'd be more than happy to tell you more.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
jase.

Hi Jase Glad you found your
Hi Jase
Glad you found your way here.
Whereabouts are you based?
I co-ordinate a project in Somerset and we have a new google group set up trying to stimulate development of all kinds of new local food activity in the county.
We are mapping existing community based sites and then looking to plot new parcels of land that could be brought into production by buying or leasing from the owner.

Local Food Project
Hi Jase,
We're very active here in Dorchester. Among other projects is one which might be right up your street. We want to start a "Really Local Food" Directory. A bit more local than the whole of Dorset. I found a free download (Dabble DB) which is supposed to be able to accept input from all. The idea was that if someone passed a 'farmgate' supplier of fresh eggs, veg, homemade conserves/pickles they could update/add to the database without the direct input of a webmaster or moderator. Maybe a moderator would be a good idea but take the responsibility of data input out of their hands.
We'd also include local businesses provided their ethos/criteria was right.
Do you know Dabble DB? dabbledb.com It's a free download.
I'm unsure if it'll do the job. I'm no database expert. No point in reinventing the wheel.
It'd be nice if there was a way of inputting a users postcode (well, the 1st 3-4 characters anyway) and the suppliers distance is displayed. Then we'd definitely know how many food miles were involved

Ian forgot to mention he's also working towards setting up a community farm. We also ran a pilot for a really local market (distance from production limited to 20 miles) bang in the middle of the high street, which we're hoping to make regular in 2010... if we can sort out problems with the existing market charter, opposition from established non-local traders etc etc.

Hi Jase, Just to let you
Hi Jase,
Just to let you know, I came across Fife Diet, a local food challenge, when I was looking for information on people who had done a 100 mile diet. Check out http://fifediet.co.uk/ for information about what they've been doing, their resources, etc.
What I don't know is how much of this was created through online publicity, or whether this is just a place for resources once people have already signed up.
I don't know if this is the sort of thing you're looking for, or if you want more of the infrastructure side of things.
Any thoughts you have about effective ways to create communities online would be appreciated, though.
